An Angel in Disguise

(Workbook Answers: Extracts 4 & 5)

Extract 4

Answer 1: Mrs. Thompson saw her husband, Joe Thompson, approaching. Maggie is the "precious burden". She is called ‘a precious burden’ because Mr. Thompson felt fatherly feelings for Maggie when he lifted her in his hands.

Answer 2: Seeing a child in her husband's arm, Mrs. Thompson asked her husband what he had there in his arms.

Joe did not reply immediately but pleaded and cautioned his wife with his looks, asking her to be gentle. Joe spoke to his angry wife only after comfortably placing Maggie on a bed. Joe formed a bond with the child as soon as he lifted her in his arms.

Answer 3: Usually Joe Thompson kept silent in front of his wife but that day he displayed a firmly-set countenance and a resolute pair of eyes.

He also answered his wife with real indignation for Maggie, something which he never did before.

Answer 4: Joe told his wife that he had brought Maggie home because she could not have walked by herself to the poorhouse. He would take her there the next day after speaking to the guardians of the poorhouse.

Answer 5: Mrs. Thompson is hard-hearted at the beginning of the story. She had turned bitter because of being childless. She was angry at her husband for bringing Maggie to their home instead of dropping her at the poorhouse.

Later on she is transformed when the love of Maggie touches her. She becomes a loving, mother-like figure.

Extract 5

Answer 1: Mrs. Thompson did not reply to her husband. Maggie was a 10 year old girl who was paralysed from the waist down and had no one to look after her.

The love and concern that Joe Thompson reflected for Maggie made his wife move toward Maggie in the little chamber.

Answer 2: Joe knew that his wife had a kind heart and that leaving a small child with her would awaken the motherly love sleeping in her heart. So he left his wife alone with the child.

Joe Thompson saw Maggie lying in a little raised position with the lamp shining full upon her face. He saw his wife sitting by the bed and talking to her.

Answer 3: The light shining through the window was seen as a good omen, because it suggested to Joe that his wife must be spending time with the child. The "Light" gave him hope and positivity.

Answer 4: The extract reveals Joe Thompson’s selflessness, kindness and determination. Joe was selfless to bring Maggie home. He faced his angry wife and showed his determination by asking her calmly to be kind towards Maggie.

Answer 5: From Maggie's expressions Joe gathered that Jane was sad and tender but not bitter towards the child.

This relieved him and he felt as if a weight had lifted from his heart. He was relieved because his wife was being kind to Maggie.
